Ten Million New Earths


The Galaxy Is Becoming More Crowded

When I was growing up, astronomers didn't know whether there were any planets orbiting other stars.

That sounds extraordinary now, but it was true. Science fiction writers happily filled the galaxy with alien worlds, strange civilizations, and exotic planets circling distant suns, yet nobody knew whether any of those places could actually exist.

The stars above us might have been surrounded by countless worlds, or they might have been completely alone. We simply didn't know. In fact, the first confirmed discovery of a planet orbiting a Sun-like star wasn't made until 1995. Many of us were already adults by then.

Today, the situation couldn't be more different.

Astronomers have now confirmed almost 6,000 exoplanets, worlds orbiting stars beyond our own Solar System. That number grows every month, and many scientists believe it is only scratching the surface.

Every indication suggests that planets are not rare exceptions but the norm. Wherever we look, stars seem to have worlds.

Some have one or two. Others have entire planetary systems. The Milky Way, which once appeared to be a vast collection of isolated suns, is increasingly revealing itself to be a galaxy crowded with destinations.

What fascinates me most is how quickly the conversation has changed. Twenty years ago, astronomers were celebrating every new discovery because each planet proved that planetary systems existed elsewhere. Today, finding another exoplanet doesn’t usually make the news. The focus has shifted. The question is no longer whether planets exist. The question is what they are like.

Do they have atmospheres? Do they have weather? Do they have oceans?

Could they support life?

Those are extraordinary questions when you stop and think about them. We are asking them about worlds that may be hundreds or even thousands of light years away.

The James Webb Space Telescope has become one of the most important tools in answering those questions. Rather than simply finding planets, Webb allows astronomers to examine them.

By studying the tiny changes in starlight as a planet passes in front of its star, scientists can identify chemicals in its atmosphere. Water vapor, methane, carbon dioxide, and other compounds leave distinctive fingerprints that Webb can detect.

For the first time in human history, we are beginning to move beyond the discovery phase and into the investigation phase.

And some of what we are finding sounds as though it truly belongs in a science fiction novel.

There are planets where temperatures exceed 2,000 degrees Celsius, hot enough to melt rock. Some worlds appear to have clouds made from minerals rather than water.

Others may experience rainfall consisting of vaporized metals. One giant planet appears to be blasted by winds exceeding 18,000 kilometers per hour, far faster than anything found in our own Solar System.

There are gas giants lower in density than Styrofoam. If you could somehow find an ocean large enough, they would theoretically float.

Nature, to no one’s surprise, is even more imaginative than science fiction writers.

Yet one of the most surprising developments in the last year has come not from a new telescope but from a new way of examining old information. Researchers have begun using increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence systems to revisit data collected by previous planet-hunting missions, particularly NASA's TESS mission.

The results have been astonishing. One recent study identified more than 11,000 potential exoplanet candidates hidden within observations that had already been analyzed. More than 10,000 of those candidates had not previously been recognised.

Think about that for a moment. The planets were already there. The data already existed. The observations had already been made. What changed was our ability to recognize the patterns hidden within that mountain of information.

That strikes me as one of the most exciting developments in science today. For centuries, discovery depended largely on collecting more information. Bigger telescopes. Better instruments. More observations. Increasingly, we are discovering that another path exists. Sometimes the information is already sitting in a database waiting for someone, or something, clever enough to find it.

If even a fraction of those 11,000 candidates are confirmed, the known population of exoplanets could increase dramatically. We may be on the verge of discovering that the galaxy contains far more nearby worlds than we previously imagined.

Of course, the question that captures most people's imagination isn't how many planets exist.

It's whether any of them might resemble Earth.

We haven't found another Earth yet, at least not one we can confidently point to and say, "That's it."

What we have found are increasing numbers of planets orbiting within what astronomers call the Goldilocks Zone. This is the region around a star that is not too cold and not too hot, where temperatures could allow liquid water to exist on the surface.

That doesn't guarantee oceans. It doesn't guarantee life. It doesn't even guarantee that the planet would be pleasant to visit. Venus lies near the habitable zone of our own Sun and is one of the most hostile places in the Solar System.

Even so, if you're looking for life, a rocky world with the potential for liquid water is an excellent place to start.

What makes this exciting is the scale of the numbers involved. Current estimates suggest there could be billions of rocky planets orbiting within habitable zones throughout the Milky Way. Not hundreds. Not thousands. Billions.

Most will almost certainly be unsuitable for life. Some may be frozen wastelands. Others may be scorching deserts. Some may have no atmosphere at all. Yet if only a tiny fraction possess stable climates and long-lasting oceans, the implications become extraordinary.

If even one percent of them are habitable, that would still be at least 10 million potential Earths.

For thousands of years humanity looked up at the stars and wondered whether there were other worlds.

Today we know there are.

The debate is no longer whether potentially habitable planets exist. The debate is which of the many candidates deserve closer examination.

At the same time, another development may accelerate discoveries even further.

For most of the Space Age, launching anything into orbit was staggeringly expensive. Every telescope, every scientific instrument, and every spacecraft required enormous budgets and years of preparation.

That is beginning to change. Companies such as SpaceX and Blue Origin are driving launch costs downward while dramatically increasing the amount of payload that can be placed into orbit.

That matters because better access to space ultimately means more telescopes. More telescopes mean better observations. Better observations mean more discoveries.

The giant observatories of the future may be far more powerful than anything we possess today. Some concepts already being discussed could directly image Earth-sized planets orbiting nearby stars and analyze their atmospheres in unprecedented detail.

Imagine what astronomers might know twenty years from now.

When I was young, we didn't know whether planets around other stars existed at all. Today we know of nearly 6,000. AI will soon add thousands more.

We are studying atmospheres, measuring weather, identifying clouds, and debating which distant worlds might possess liquid water. Every year the galaxy becomes a little less theoretical and a little more real.

We haven't found alien life. We haven't discovered another Earth. We certainly haven't built starships.

Yet.

But for the first time in history, we can point to thousands of real worlds and say with confidence that they exist.

Perhaps that is the most remarkable discovery of all. The galaxy is no longer an abstract idea populated only by imagination. It is becoming a map filled with actual places.

And if the last thirty years are any guide, the next twenty could be exciting indeed.

Strike For The Galaxy Pre-Order

Before I finish, there is one other piece of news I wanted to share.

Book 9 in the Return to the Galaxy series, Strike for the Galaxy, is now available for pre-order and will be releasing later this month.
